Otter

Welcome to Otter Class!  We are a fantastic mixed Year 3 and 4 class.  Miss Bliss is our teacher and we are very lucky to be joined by Mrs Eaton throughout the week.

You will find lots of information about Otter Class on this page and updates will be sent to parents / carers via Dojo or the school office.  If you have any questions, please do come and talk to us at the end of the day or send a message.

Need to know!

  • PE will be on Tuesdays and Fridays.  Children will need to come to school in PE kit on those days.  They should also bring a warm / waterproof coat as PE will either take place outside or in the village hall.
  • Swimming will take place every Monday afternoon in Autumn Term 2, commencing on Monday 4th November.  Please ensure your child brings a swimming kit to school (swimsuit / swim shorts, towel and goggles).  They will also need a warm coat as they can feel chilly after swimming.
  • Spelling tests will take place every Friday.  The spelling list will be sent home every term and you can also find the lists below.
  • As we are now heading into autumn, please can you ensure that your child brings a warm, waterproof coat to school.  We do endeavour to take children outside for a break every day in all but the most inclement of weather!

Reading:

We encourage reading at home with an adult at least five times each week. Remember to record it in your reading record!  Please continue to read to your child even when they can read themselves - it helps to develop their fluency and comprehension skills, and it's a special time to share together!

Our aim is to nurture readers who really love reading for pleasure!  At school, children are encouraged to spend time in the ‘Book Nook’, reading books with their friends in a comfortable and cosy environment - there are blankets and some furries to snuggle with! We hope that children will choose things they enjoy reading, such as stories, comics, information texts, and discover their favourite places to read at home too.

Spellings

Spellings will be sent out via ClassDojo every half term and spelling tests will take place every Friday.  Children can access spelling activities on the Spelling Shed website. In addition, you can also find the current spelling lists here:

Maths at home

All children should use DoodleMaths at home as frequently as possible.  In addition, assignments will be set every week.  Please contact Miss Bliss if your child does not have their login details.  Mrs Beck hands out prizes every week for the top Doodlers!

At school, Year 4 children will be working hard to learn their times tables in preparation for the statutory Multiplication Check in June.  Children can also practice the test, using Maths Frame at home.

What will Otter Class be learning about this term?

As well as White Rose Maths lessons and Literacy Tree English lessons, which incorporates a fantastic range of children's literature to support learning, children will be studying a range of other subjects too.

In Science, children will be learning about Sound and Light.  We will find out how sound travels and how we can hear different sounds.  Our Geography topic is 'Villages and Cities' and children will learn about the physical and human geographical features of settlements. Our History unit this term is 'Prehistoric Britain' and we will explore many aspects of this period in history, including the stone and bronze ages.  In addition, we will further explore Hinduism in RE, as well as Christianity and Christian beliefs later in the term.  Children will be learning how to draw and paint people, using a range of media in Art and DT will have a Christmas theme this term, so the details will remain secret for now!
